The Genesis
What if the octopus were not there to sink the ship?

The octopus appeared in my work during a difficult time in my personal life.
In the very first painting, it wraps its arms around a ship. Not to pull it under, as a Kraken would, but to hold it gently — perhaps even to keep it from sinking.
As though the story did not have to be the one we know.
From its first appearance, the octopus holds the ambiguity that has stayed with my work ever since: strength and gentleness, power and tenderness.
